I studied Illustration and Graphic Design at Falmouth School of Art in Cornwall and then worked as a graphic designer for over 15 years. I have since become freelance and now paint professionally. The dramatic countryside of the South of England continually inspires me to paint large, bright and bold landscapes in oil paints and in 2009 I decided to fulfil a personal ambition of mine to walk The Ridgeway. This ancient track holds huge significance for me as an individual because it builds a bridge between many of the places I have lived in my life. Starting at Avebury and connecting with the small village of Ashbury near the Uffington White Horse, then on toward my home village of Aston Tirrold on the Berskhire Downs and ending at Ivinghoe Beacon near the village where I bought my first house. With this in mind I came up with the idea of walking a segment of The Ridgeway each month. I wanted to track the seasonal changes and capture the entire route with ample photographs and an online blog. I am planning on using all this information to produce an exhibition of paintings of Views seen from The Ridgeway which I will exhibit in a few years time. The exhibition will centre around 20-25 large oil paintings, along with the photographs and observations I have made along the way, and will emphasise a ‘SENSE OF PLACE’ that The Ridgeway track represents for me.
As a painter I am inspired by the post war artist Paul Nash and the Austrian artist Friedrich Hundertwasser. My work is regularly exhibited at various galleries throughout the West Country and I also have work in private collections around the world from Australia to Finland. Four of my decorative paintings were donated as a gift for his Royal Highness Sultan Qaboos of Oman in the Middle East.
