Literature

Many authors lived near the Ridgeway or mentioned the track or its associated antiquities. Best known are Richard Jefferies and, in The Scouring of the White Horse, Thomas Hughes, but the list, which is unlikely to be comprehensive, includes Harrison Ainsworth, John Aubrey, John Betjeman, Rupert Brooke, G K Chesterton, Geoffrey Grigson, Alfred Hill, Kenneth Grahame, William Morris, Walter Scott, and Edward Thomas

There are also many anonymous legends for which the best source is Leslie Grinsell's Folklore of Prehistoric Britain 1976.  (For a general survey of legends click here.)

The Friends of the Ridgeway has compiled a bibliography, which we hope is useful, though we are aware that it is not exhaustive and would welcome any additions.
